Grolsch Beer Signs
Grolsch is a Dutch premium pilsner from Koninklijke Grolsch (Royal Grolsch), brewed in Enschede in the eastern Netherlands. It is best known for its green swing-top (beugel) bottle and a fuller, hoppier taste than many mass-market lagers. The name means “from Grol” — the old name of Groenlo, where it started.

On 11 May 1615, Willem Neerfeldt bought a building in the fortified town of Grolle (now Groenlo) and opened a brewery during the Dutch Revolt. His apprentice Peter Kuijper later married Neerfeldt’s daughter Jenneken after — according to company lore — three attempts to brew a beer good enough to win her hand. The winning recipe used two hop varieties, one for bitterness and one for aroma. Kuijper became master of the local brewers’ guild in 1676.

The brewery stayed in the family for generations and was later known as De Klok. In 1876 a larger plant was built outside Groenlo’s walls. In 1897 Utrecht brewer Theo de Groen bought De Klok and introduced the half-litre swing-top bottle (porcelain stopper, rubber ring, metal clasp). When crown caps became the industry standard, he kept the beugel: “I’ll decide how to bottle my beer.”

In 1922 De Klok merged with the Enschedesche Bierbrouwerij. Production ran in both Groenlo and Enschede until a new brewery between Enschede and Boekelo opened in 2004. The old sites closed soon after. An Enschede fireworks disaster in 2000 badly damaged the city brewery; Grolsch rebuilt and carried on.

The company received the Royal title in 1995. SABMiller bought it in 2008; after the AB InBev–SABMiller deal, Asahi acquired Grolsch in 2016.

Flagship Grolsch Premium Pilsner is a pale lager, typically 5.0% ABV in the Netherlands and much of Europe. It is brewed with two malts and two hops (often cited as Hallertau types such as Emerald and Magnum/Herkules) and has more body and hop character than a typical supermarket pils. Taste is usually described as crisp but maltier and slightly more bitter than Heineken.

Strength varies by market. In the UK it has been cut in stages to 3.4% ABV for tax and sales reasons; that is not the original Dutch recipe. Other lines have included Blond, Weizen, seasonal boks, alcohol-free, and the strong specialty Het Kanon (~11.6%).

The swing-top bottle remains the brand’s signature: reusable, no opener needed, and instantly recognizable. Guitarists also famously used the rubber gaskets as picks. Grolsch sits as a mid-premium Dutch lager — older and more “characterful” than Heineken, less global-mass than Carlsberg, and still tied to Twente and Groenlo rather than Amsterdam.
