Carlsberg Beer Signs
Carlsberg is a Danish pilsner lager and the flagship brand of Carlsberg Group, one of the world’s largest brewers. It is known for its green bottle, hop-forward crispness, the slogan “Probably the best lager in the world,” and a history that mixed brewing with serious science.

Jacob Christian J.C. Jacobsen (1811–1887) took over his father’s small Copenhagen brewery in 1835. After tasting Bavarian lager, he traveled to Munich in 1845, brought back Spaten yeast in a custom hatbox, and kept it cool by dousing it with water along the way. Early batches were brewed in his mother’s copper wash basin.

In 1847 he built a new brewery on Valby Hill outside Copenhagen’s old ramparts, where there was space and cool storage for lager. He named it Carlsberg after his five-year-old son Carl and the Danish word bjerg (hill). The first brew was finished on 10 November 1847. Export began in 1868 with a barrel sent to Edinburgh.

J.C. treated brewing as applied science. In 1875 he founded the Carlsberg Laboratory. In 1883 Emil Christian Hansen isolated a pure yeast strain there — Saccharomyces carlsbergensis — and the brewery gave it away to other brewers. In 1909 S.P.L. Sørensen invented the pH scale at the same lab.

J.C. also created the Carlsberg Foundation in 1876. It still owns the company and funds Danish science, art, and culture.

His son Carl later opened New Carlsberg next door (1882) and outsold his father; J.C. renamed his plant Old Carlsberg. They reconciled shortly before J.C.’s death in 1887. The two breweries merged in 1906. Carl also built the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek art museum and the famous Elephant Gate at the Copenhagen brewery.

Carlsberg later merged with rival Tuborg (1970) and expanded worldwide. The iconic green-label pilsner logo was designed by Thorvald Bindesbøll in 1904. The “Probably…” tagline dates to 1973.

Taste is usually described as balanced rather than extreme: not too sweet, not too bitter, built for session drinking. The group’s wider portfolio includes Tuborg, Kronenbourg 1664, Brooklyn, and many local brands. The Carlsberg name itself is sold in roughly 90 countries.

Unlike Busch’s “mountains and camo” image, Carlsberg’s identity is Danish industrial heritage: green glass, science, elephants, and a slightly wry claim that it is probably the best.
